Coming out is sports’ most effective change agent



While many LGBT sports activists belittle the power of coming out to change sports culture, we know that athletes, coaches and others in sports coming out privately and publicly changes culture like nothing else. The latest example is gay former high school baseball player Trevor Ritchie, who was teased mercilessly before coming out to his teammates, but who was embraced once he did. The teasing was replaced by understanding. No policy, no manual, no training session with coaches could have ever done that.
