TV is about to be taken over by a black lesbian superhero and we can't wait

We’re about to get a black lesbian superhero.

The CW has released pictures from new show Black Lightning.

Nafessa Williams will play the title character’s daughter, Anissa Pierce.

Anissa’s own superhero name is Thunder.

The character is lesbian in the comics and will also be in the show.

Chantal Thuy will play Anissa’s love interest, Grace Choi. Variety reported Grace will be a recurring character.

She becomes Anissa’s confidant about the struggles and challenges of having superhero abilities.

Deadline describes Anissa as ‘passionate and quick-witted.’

She is Jefferson’s ‘twenty-something daughter’ who is studying at medical school while teaching part-time at her father’s school.

Black Lightning was DC Comics‘ first African-American superhero when it debuted in April 1977 with its own imprint.

Jefferson Pierce retired from his superhero persona Black Lightning nine years ago after it started to put a strain on his family.

He dropped it to settle ‘into being a principal and a dad.’

When a local gang threaten his city though, he is forced to return to his days of crime-fighting.

Jefferson is played by Cress Williams.

His daughters, Anissa and Jennifer are all the while growing into strong independent women.

China Ann McClain plays the youngest Pierce, Jennifer.

The CW premieres Black Lightning on 16 January.
